East Midlands Airport’s ambitious expansion plans are set to transform the region into one of the UK’s most powerful logistics hubs — and Nottingham-based Same Day Today Couriers is preparing to grow alongside it.
East Midlands Airport has already welcomed four new cargo airlines since May, with new trade routes to China strengthening its role as a gateway for global commerce. To meet the rising demand, the airport has expanded capacity for wide-bodied aircraft, ensuring it can handle higher freight volumes and more diverse international traffic.
Looking further ahead, long-term plans could see freight volumes increase by as much as 50 per cent over the next two decades. This
growth is expected to support more than 20,000 new jobs and deliver nearly £4 billion to the national economy, cementing the Midlands’
position as the beating heart of UK logistics.
This wave of infrastructure investment comes at the same time as unprecedented growth in online shopping. UK online retail sales reached
a record £127 billion in 2024, according to Retail Gazette, fuelling demand for fast and reliable delivery services.
For Same Day Today Couriers, this combination of e-commerce growth and regional infrastructure investment presents a major opportunity. The company is scaling up to meet customer needs by investing in its vehicles, adopting new online technologies, and recruiting more local
drivers.
“This is a landmark moment for the Midlands logistics sector,” said Mat Lowe, Director of Same Day Today Couriers. “As East Midlands Airport
expands and e-commerce continues to grow, we’re in the perfect position to deliver for our customers while creating new jobs here in
Nottingham.”
