The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) states that air cargo operations through UK airports have recorded strong growth, with volumes exceeding pre-pandemic levels in the second quarter of 2025.
Between April and June, nearly 700,000 tonnes of freight were moved, representing a 6% increase year-on-year.
The figures highlight a rebound in global trade flows and the resilience of the UK’s cargo sector.
Trade with Asia saw some of the sharpest increases. Cargo volumes to Delhi rose 61%, while Mumbai recorded a 41% jump compared with the same period in 2024.
Other leading international hubs for UK freight included Dubai, New York, Doha Hamad and Leipzig.
The CAA said the growth underlined the UK’s role as a major global logistics hub, supporting manufacturers, exporters and supply chains across the economy.
While passenger traffic also hit record highs in the first half of the year, with 141 million travellers, industry leaders stressed the importance of freight in sustaining airport operations and connectivity.
Tim Alderslade, chief executive of Airlines UK, said: “The sector continues to prioritise both passengers and freight customers. Cargo growth is vital for regional economies and helps maintain the world-class connectivity that underpins UK trade.”
The figures show that the UK’s aviation sector is benefitting from strong global demand for both passenger and freight services, setting the stage for a record summer season.
