Manchester-based shipping software recruits senior developer to accelerate next-generation of eCommerce solutions
Shipping software specialist Shipster is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a senior team expansion to accelerate the development of next-generation products and services for eCommerce businesses.
Over the past decade, the Manchester-based company has grown from a small team building custom integrations into an industry-recognised platform, powering tens of millions of eCommerce shipments annually. Along the way, it has adapted to major shifts in global shipping regulations, helping online retailers navigate a fast-changing logistics landscape.
Shipster has now strengthened its leadership with two significant changes. Phillip Smyth has joined as Senior Developer, bringing extensive experience in software development, warehouse systems, and innovation management for organisations including Körber Supply Chain and BAE Systems.
Meanwhile, Rachel Bircher has been promoted to Head of Support, recognising her contribution since joining in 2020 and the vital role of Shipster’s customer-first support function, which serves over 100 retailers.
These moves are central to Shipster’s long-term strategy, reinforcing its commitment to both innovation and service as it enters its second decade. The company is currently ramping up the development and expansion of its post-purchase journey solutions, with enhanced branded delivery experiences and returns tools – addressing the evolving expectations of modern eCommerce businesses and their customers.
Tony Cheetham, Founder and Managing Director, said: “For a decade, Shipster has been disrupting the eCommerce shipping space, offering businesses an affordable, customisable and flexible alternative to off-the-shelf platforms. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and these changes position us to go even further—evolving as a business and building the capabilities we need to deliver the next generation of products.”
Smyth’s background spans game development, fashion tech, and critical national infrastructure. He will now lead the build of Shipster’s latest software offerings, working closely with Cheetham to revitalise innovation at the heart of the business.
Phillip Smyth said: “Joining Shipster at such a pivotal time is incredibly exciting. There’s a clear vision for innovation, and a culture that empowers developers. I’m thrilled to be part of shaping the next generation of products that will help our clients create smarter and more convenient delivery experiences for their customers.”
Bircher’s progression from part-time support technician to leading the continually growing support department is a standout example of internal growth at Shipster. Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping a customer support function that now represents a core part of the business’ day-to-day operations.
Rachel Bircher said: “It’s been amazing to grow with Shipster. From joining as a support technician to now leading the department, I’ve had the chance to learn, build, and make a real impact. I’m proud to be part of a team that puts customers first and excited to help shape how we support them as the company moves into its next chapter.”
Founded in 2015 by software house Oddsphere, Shipster has grown organically to support businesses including Couture Club, SkateHut, Global Football Company, AYBL, and Rixo. Strategic hires, office expansions, and guidance from mentors and investors—including the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund and Fearless Adventures—have helped Shipster scale its operations.
The platform now runs on over 2,000 warehouse packing stations, processing tens of millions of shipments annually. Strategic partnerships and integrations with platforms such as Ordorite, Descartes Peoplevox, Huxloe, and Shopify have further cemented its foothold in the shipping technology sector.
Tony Cheetham added: “We’ve always stayed close to our customers, listening carefully and adapting fast. This next chapter is about deepening that commitment, building the tools they need to stay competitive, and making sure we’re always one step ahead of what’s coming next.”
