Building work for a £4 million Carlsberg Britvic depot at the West Midlands Interchange development near Wolverhampton is starting within days.
The new depot operation at Staffordshire West Midlands Interchange development in Four Ashes will be the first business at the site and will feature state-of-the-art facilities to support the drinks company’s growing logistics needs.
Staffordshire County Council said up to 8,500 jobs could be created directly, with more in supply chain businesses once the commercial growth zone is up and running from next year.
The council’s cabinet member for economy and skills Councillor Martin Murray said: “It’s fantastic news that Carlsberg Britvic is coming to Staffordshire as first occupier on the WMI site – creating hundreds of employment and skills development opportunities for our communities.
“This demonstrates Staffordshire’s position at the beating heart of the country for major business investment, with our superb connectivity which will be further enhanced soon and as a leading location for the logistics sector. The Staffordshire Jobs and Careers Service is primed to promote opportunities as soon as they arise to our residents and ensuring the county sees the full benefit of the WMI.”
Robin Everall, head of development at Oxford Properties Group which is part of the joint venture behind the WMI, said: “Attracting Carlsberg Britvic as the first occupier at West Midlands Interchange is a significant milestone for the project, underlining the quality of the offer we are creating and the importance of its location. The bringing together of the UK’s largest multi-beverage supplier and one of the most important logistics developments in the country will deliver a significant boost to the regional and national economy.”
Over the coming decade, the site around the M6 junction at Gailey will become one of the largest development sites in the region with the construction of a huge rail freight terminal.
Staffordshire Jobs and Careers service is a key partner of the project to ensure that residents and enterprises will benefit from both employment and skills development opportunities created on the site by Carlsberg Britvic and the businesses which follow it.
The council said the prospect of new jobs will see the team promoting opportunities with the help of its expert team of brokers to match job seekers with appropriate vacancies. An in-person service is also available and the team can help people navigate job searches and put together a plan to support them through interviews.
